Ah, Summer... Keep Calm and Stay off the Tarmac!

Ah, summer. That magical time of year when the UK gets approximately three days of lukewarm sunshine, the entire nation panics, and our dogs suddenly realize they are wearing an inescapable, non-refundable fur coat.

If you’re currently navigating the tropical paradise of a 22°C British "heatwave" with a canine companion, here is a handy guide to surviving the season:

1. The Pavement Patrol

Before stepping outside, we must perform the sacred ritual: placing the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. If it’s fine, you may proceed—though your dog will still look at you after three minutes as if you’ve forced them into a forced-march across the Sahara.

2. The Hydration Station Paradox

You will dutifully carry a portable water bottle with a clever little fold-out bowl. You will offer it to your dog every six minutes with encouraging, high-pitched drivel. Your dog will disdainfully ignore it, only to happily gulp down a lukewarm, muddy puddle filled with questionable algae behind the local pub. Bon appétit.

3. The Quest for Shade

While you attempt to sit outside a pub enjoying a pint, your dog will meticulously track the tiny 2-inch sliver of shade cast by your chair. As the sun moves, they will slowly slink across the beer garden floor like a melting furry clock, looking so dramatically impoverished that tourists will assume you haven’t fed them since 2019.

4. The "Sausage in an Oven" Syndrome

Remember, flat-faced breeds, senior dogs, and thick-coated champions suffer the most in the warmth. If the sun is blazing, ditch the midday walk altogether. They aren't missing out; they are far happier sprawled star-eagled on the cold kitchen tiles under the breeze of a fan you bought in a panic at Argos.
