Summer Diarrhea in Dogs: What Every Pet Parent Should Know

Common reasons include:

  • Heat stress or heatstroke: Reduced blood flow to the intestines and inflammation can cause diarrhea, sometimes with blood.
  • Drinking contaminated water: Dogs may drink from puddles, ponds, or stagnant water during hot weather, exposing them to bacteria or parasites.
  • Dietary changes: Eating spoiled food, scavenging, or sudden treats during outdoor activities can upset the stomach.
  • Dehydration: While dehydration itself doesn't usually cause diarrhea, diarrhea combined with heat can quickly become dangerous.
  • Stress: Travel, boarding, or changes in routine during summer can also lead to loose stools.

What you can do at home:

  • Keep your dog in a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned area and ensure constant access to fresh, cool water.
  • Feed a bland diet (such as boiled chicken and plain white rice) for 24–48 hours if recommended by your veterinarian.
