Common Reasons for Constipation in Puppies

Constipation is uncomfortable for your lovely puppy and is often a symptom of a digestive issue. It occurs when the dog faeces are dry and hard, making them difficult to pass.

Here are the most common reasons a puppy might become constipated:

  •   Dehydration: This is a very frequent cause of dog constipation If your puppy isn't drinking enough water, their colon absorbs too much moisture from the stool, leaving it hard and dry.
  •   Eating Indigestible Items: Puppies explore with their mouths and may swallow things like dirt, gravel, hair (from self-grooming), bones, or pieces of toys. These items can clump up and cause a blockage.
  •   Sudden Change in Diet: Switching dog foods too quickly can upset your puppy's sensitive digestive tract.
  •   Lack of Fibre: A diet lacking adequate fibre can lead to puppies stool that is too small or dry to move properly. If you puppy is older than 12 weeks, UK vets recommend GastroBalance dog constipation relief
  •   Lack of Exercise: Physical activity helps stimulate the normal movement of the intestines. A sedentary puppy is more prone to sluggish digestion.
  •   Pain or Difficulty Positioning: If your puppy has pain (e.g., from an injury or underlying joint issue), they may be reluctant to get into the squatting position needed to defecate, causing them to hold it in.
  •  Medication Side Effects: Some medications can slow down the digestive system.
  •  Matted Hair: For long-haired puppies, matted fur around the anus can physically block the passage of stool.

Important Note: If your puppy is straining, whining, or hasn't had a bowel movement in more than 48 hours, you should contact your veterinarian immediately. A blockage can be an emergency!
